A commercial motorcyclist was allegedly stabbed to death by a member of a transport unionās tax collection group, commonly referred to as agberos, following a dispute over a N100 ticket in Ijoko, Ogun State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday night when an argument between the deceased and several levy collectors escalated into violence.
While it remains unclear whether the suspect has been arrested, the killing prompted protests by commercial motorcyclists across Lambe, Agbado, and Akute communities on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses reported that riders confronted levy collectors in various parts of the affected areas, disrupting transport services and forcing many commuters to walk to their destinations.
One motorcyclist, identified only as Rasheed, said that two individuals were stabbed during the altercation, with only one surviving.
āThey were fighting over a N100 ticket. What started as a minor disagreement escalated on Tuesday night. The deceased was a motorcyclist from Nasarawa. His colleagues are now confronting agberos in Lambe, Ijoko, and parts of Akute,ā he said.
Another rider in Akute, Ganiyu, confirmed the incident, noting that tensions have remained high since the stabbing.
āThe man was stabbed to death by an agbero during an argument over the ticket. The attacker suddenly produced a knife. Many riders have refused to work since the incident, which is why fewer commercial motorcyclists are operating today. The police have intervened and arrested some individuals during subsequent confrontations,ā he said.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident occurred in Ijoko, within the Agbado-Sango axis, rather than in Akute.
āFollowing the stabbing, the deceasedās colleagues staged protests in Lambe and Akute to express their anger,ā the officer said.
Attempts to obtain an official statement from the Ogun State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, had not responded to inquiries at the time of filing this report.
