Hundreds of residents from Zurak and Sabon Gari communities in Plateau State’s Wase Local Government Area have fled their homes due to renewed fear of bandits’ attack.
The displacement followed two separate attacks on Monday, where gunmen on motorcycles killed a soldier and five residents in Zurak, while three soldiers went missing.
The attackers targeted security posts before moving into residential areas, burning houses and shops, and looting food items and valuables.
A resident of Wase, speaking anonymously, expressed the community’s fear and uncertainty, saying, “We understand that they are doing their best, but the bandits often come in large numbers and overpower the security.”
The resident added, “Our lives are not guaranteed. People cannot continue to live in fear all the time. When law and order are restored, we will return”.
The attacks are part of a larger wave of banditry and kidnapping in Wase LGA, including the abduction of 28 travelers from Zak community in December 2025.
However, Plateau State’s new Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, has vowed to make the state safer, working with other security agencies.
