City – No pay, no power for GDE

Local newsNews

Kwa-Thema – The CoE rejected the Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) request for more time to pay its outstanding debt to the city.

The GDE owes the metro more than R50m for Section 20 schools in Ekurhuleni.

The metro said it would continue disconnecting electricity at the affected schools.

Concerned parents protested the disconnection at some schools on Monday.

On Tuesday, parents dismissed learners from all Kwa-Thema schools, cutting the school day short.

Some schools have had no electricity for weeks, and the parents want a resolution.

Unfortunately, the metro will not reconnect the power.

The affected schools include Zimisele, Nkabinde, Muzomsha, Zamani, Ntokozweni and Tlakula.

“The city continues to disconnect all schools. The disconnected schools will remain off until the Department of Education pays the outstanding debt,” added Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson.
