Responding to the tragedy, the Consulate General of Nigeria said it ā€œcondemns in the strongest terms the killing of one of its nationals,ā€ adding that the ā€œreport of this incident has caused the family, the Nigerian community, and the Diplomatic Missions in South Africa much shock and painā€.

The Consulate said the unfortunate incident has raised questions over the safety of Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.

ā€œIt also raises questions about what seems to be a deliberate attempt by some elements to generalise and tag well-meaning, respectable Nigerians in the country as criminals,ā€ the Consulate said.

ā€œHowever, we are encouraged after extensive meetings and by the proactive investigations by the South African authorities.

ā€œWe have been assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

ā€œHence, we look forward to the outcome of the investigations.ā€

ā€œOur position is that no matter what the allegations are, there are processes and steps to justice.ā€

The Consulate said all should be presumed innocent and granted a fair hearing in a court of law.

ā€œNo one should take the law into their own hands,ā€ the Consulate stated. Ā

ā€œWe condemn all forms of extrajudicial killings. All lives matter.

ā€œThis includes Nigerians.ā€

The Consulate said, while awaiting the findings of the ongoing investigations and the ultimate prosecution of the perpetrators, ā€œwe appeal to our nationals to remain calm and law-abidingā€ as they conduct their activities and go about their daily lives in South Africa.

The consulate extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

ā€œWhile we pray for his soul to rest in peace, we are poised to continue to fulfill our mandate of overseeing their welfare and fair treatment of all Nigerians in the country,ā€ the Consulate said.

Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department has denied being involved in the anti-drug campaign, while claiming that when their officers arrived on the scene, Khumalo and his group had already left.
