Ghanaian social media personality, Twene Jonas, has described as ‘nonsensical’ a recent judgement given against Twitter influencer, Albert Nat Hyde aka Bongo Ideas, for defamation.
The Accra High Court, in a case brought before it by another Twitter influencer known as Kojo Forex, suing Bongo Ideas for defamation of character, ordered that the loudmouthed social media nuisance pay Forex, a total of Ghc 170,000 in damages and other costs.
The breakdown of the judgement was Ghc 100,000 in general damages – although Forex had sought Ghc 1,000,000 – an additional Ghc 50,000 for aggravated and compensatory damages, and Ghc 20,000 to cover the legal costs incurred by Forex in the case.
Bongo has so far not shown any willingness or ability to pay back the money but has rendered an unqualified and public apology and retraction of his comments, which were also part of the judgement.
Reacting to the judgment, Jonas said it’s common knowledge that Bongo is broke and that even selling his entire family cannot raise the needed Ghc 170,000. He added that the better cause of action would have been for him to be sentenced to community service – either weeding or some other activity that would actually benefit society.
