The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that deaths have occurred due to Lassa fever at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in the state.
The denial was contained in a statement issued by the Information Officer of the Kwara State Ministry of Health, Saad Hamdalat, following an emergency investigation into the claims.
According to the statement, the investigation, led by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Kamaldeen Khadeejah, found no confirmed case of Lassa fever among corps members or staff at the NYSC orientation camp.
The statement explained that the NYSC member whose case has been widely shared online fell ill and was taken to hospital on February 1, 2026, later dying on February 7.
However, there was no laboratory confirmation indicating that the illness was caused by Lassa fever.
The state government urged the public to ignore unverified reports and reassured residents that surveillance and health awareness measures at the NYSC camp have been strengthened to ensure the early detection of any potential health risks.
