The 97th Academy Awards nominated the following 10 movies for the biggest reward:
‘ Anora’
Sean Baker stars in Sean Baker’s sex-worker feel” Anora,” an nearly universally admired film about school, socialism, and Cinderella dreams.
It won the Cannes show’s best trophy in May last year, becoming the first US film to do so since 2011. But the longer journey to Oscars victory back home was far from assured.
Anatra won numerous awards from Hollywood’s manufacturers, managers, writers, and critics, making it the month’s winner after leaving the Golden Globes in January.
Conclave:
‘ Conclave,’ starring Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini, took top award at Britain’s BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards © JUSTIN TALLIS / AFP/FileTwisty Vatican-set movie” Conclave”, based on a Robert Harris tale about the strange and fierce politics of pope-picking, has surged at the last moment to become a joint popular with” Anora” for the best prize.
It debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in August, drawing mixed opinions. When it won the top prize at Britain’s BAFTAs, that drastically changed as the honors time progressed.
And then next weekend,” Meeting” – starring Oscar nominations Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini – took the top prize from Hollywood’s Screen Actors Guild.
The Brutalist is a movie.
The Brutalist, an immigrant story, appears to be the most possible contender to win an Oscar for second best professional for Adrien Brody, who plays a brilliant engineer and Holocaust victim.
It is a possible dark horse for ideal picture as well.
The longest nominated movie, which was shot for less than$ 10 million, looks like a lavish Hollywood epic but runs more than three and a half hours ( with intermission ).
” A Full Unidentified”
The best shot at Oscars glory for’ A Complete Unknown ‘ is 29-year-old megastar Timothee Chalamet, though some have suggested a best picture surprise © VALERIE MACON/ AFP/FileThis old-school biopic of a fresh Bob Dylan, endorsed by the famous folk singer himself, was the last Oscars contender to get screened for voters next year.
Eight nominations were quickly received in favor.
Timothee Chalamet, 29, is the film’s best-looking shot at glory, though some have suggested a surprise best picture.
‘ Wicked’
The highly anticipated live musical Oscars performance from” Wicked” stars Ariana Grande ( R ) and Cynthia Erivo ( L ) is scheduled for April 24. Etienne Laurent / AFP/File” Wicked” brings the beloved Broadway musical about the early years of the” Wizard of Oz” villain to the big screen.
With a staggering$ 730 million box office worldwide, it is the biggest blockbuster on the list.
Voters may wait for the second and final installment to honor this lavish adaptation.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, however, won’t let that prevent them from ruining the stage with a highly anticipated live musical Oscars performance.
Emilia Perez
No film had a more turbulent campaign than’ Emilia Perez,’ starring (L-R ) Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez© Valery HACHE / AFP/FileNo film had a more turbulent campaign than” Emilia Perez”.
Netflix purchased the musical, which was directed in France by Jacques Audiard, before making its Cannes debut. It is about a drug cartel boss who transitions to life as a woman and turns her back on crime.
It received 13 nods and was highly regarded at the Golden Globes.
But its prospects evaporated when racist tweets from Oscar-nominated star Karla Sofia Gascon emerged, compounding criticism of the movie’s Mexican cliches and use of artificial intelligence.
” The Substance”
Although Demi Moore is likely to win the best actress prize,” The Substance” likely left too many Academy members uneasy.
” The Substance” likely left too many Academy voters feeling queasy to realistically take the top prize, but star Demi Moore is a favorite for best actress.
” I’m Still Here,”
I’m Still Here, a movie about a family that has been ripped apart by Brazil’s military dictatorship, has consistently been a strong contender for best international film thanks to Fernanda Torres, who also has a strong nomination for best actress.
But the movie caused a huge shock by landing a best picture nomination too.
With Fernanda Torres as the winner of the best actress award in Rio de Janeiro,” I’m Still Here” has whipped up frenzied levels of support typically reserved for soccer World Cups in Brazil, with organizers of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival parades planning to give live Oscar updates.
Dune: Part Two
‘ Dune: Part Two’ auteur Denis Villeneuve ( C ) was snubbed for best director, his film stars Zendaya ( L ) and Timothee Chalamet ( R ) © Daniel LEAL / AFP/FileA huge commercial hit – its$ 715 million worldwide box office far outstripped the original –” Dune: Part Two” also earned stellar reviews.
The epic sci-fi sequel was released way back in February 2024, which is not typically the year for Oscar contenders, and it received just five nominations, with Denis Villeneuve receiving nod for director.
The likelihood of a third” Dune” the following year lowers its hopes for the best of the two.
‘ Nickel Boys ‘
With its creative use of first-person perspective,” Nickel Boys” won over critics with its innovative use of first-person perspective to transport audiences to the trauma and abuse experienced by young Black boys at a infamous 1960s Florida reform school.
With a global haul of only$ 2.8 million, it is by far the smallest nominated movie at the box office.
