Waterval Boven ā A 30-year-old man thought to be mentally challenged has been mauled to death by five vicious dogs ā three of which have been identified as pitbulls.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, in Waterval Boven near Belfast outside Middleburg, Mpumalanga
The dogs somehow escaped from the scrapyard before attacking the man as he passed the premises.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the police and emergency medical services responded soon after they were alerted about the attack.
Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane said they found a lifeless body of a man lying on the road next to a scrapyard.
āThe victim was certified dead at the scene and was later identified by his family,ā the police spokesperson said.
āPreliminary investigations revealed that the two pit bulls and three other dogs belong to the owner of the scrapyard,ā said Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane, adding that the incident occurred around 02h00, but the police were only alerted three hours later.
āIt was also established that the deceased was a patient with mental health challenges,ā the police spokesperson said.
An inquest has been opened.
