Police reinforce security after Lakurawa bandits kill 33 in Kebbi

Kebbi State Police Command has reinforced security in communities affected by a deadly attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits in Arewa Local Government Area.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement by the command’s spokesman, Bashir Usman.

Usman said the violent incident occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed men, suspected to be Lakurawa bandits, invaded the district, reportedly intending to rustle cattle, leaving 33 people dead.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the assailants were believed to have crossed into Kebbi from Gudu Local Government Area in Sokoto State.

“During the attack, residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilised in response to the invasion. In the ensuing confrontation, 33 people lost their lives,” Usman said.

He added that the command, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, had deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected communities.

Sustained area domination patrols are ongoing to restore normalcy and prevent further attacks.

The police also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Arewa community.

Usman urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements through established security channels, cautioning against engaging armed criminals directly due to the grave risks involved.

“Targeted operations are ongoing to track down and apprehend the perpetrators, as well as to strengthen early warning mechanisms in vulnerable communities across the state,” he said.
