We’re working to return IDPs to ancestral homes – Nigerian Govt

The Federal Government has said it is working to resettle Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, back to their ancestral homes.

The Minister Of Humanitarian Affairs And Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, made this known on Wednesday on Arise Television.

According to him, IDP camps are temporary settlements and not a place people will stay permanently.

“IDP Camps should be temporary settlements. But to resettle people back at their homes, peace has to return.

“We are working alongside the Office of the National Security Adviser to ensure that the ancestral homes of individuals in these camps are secured.

“Displacement in the country is primarily driven by ongoing crises. Although camps provide temporary shelter for Internally Displaced Persons, permanent resettlement requires the restoration of peace in their ancestral homes.

“Efforts are underway to secure these areas. Resettlement without established peace and necessary conditions would be futile.

“Therefore, plans are actively being developed with security organizations to facilitate the safe return of these individuals,” the minister said.
