Umahi: Don’t use influence to silence critics – Kingibe warns

The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ireti Kingibe has warned politicians against using influence to silence critics.

Kingibe issued the warning on Friday while addressing newsmen shortly after the release of a woman simply identified as Tracy Ohiri, who accused the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi of owing her N250m 12 years ago when Umahi was governor of Ebonyi.

DAILY POST recalls that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore had confronted Umahi at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command over the alleged use of police to settle personal scores.

Reacting, Senator Kingibe said, “Injustice, regardless of its perpetrator, signals an era of impunity. This issue extends beyond powerful individuals, encompassing anyone with the means and opportunity.

“For democracy to progress, this pervasive culture requires comprehensive action. As the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory and chairperson for women’s affairs in the Senate, it is my duty to advocate for constituents.

“When I learned of a constituent’s wrongful detention despite a protective bill, I intervened. She was unwell and hospitalized. I mobilized colleagues and contacted the Senate President, ensuring justice was pursued at the highest levels.

“I promised I would not leave until justice was served, and I am pleased the woman has been released.”
