The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has raised the alarm over the detention of three social media influencers in Gombe State. The influencers are Abu Ayrin, Musa Khale, and Alhaji Audu Atampa Bajoga. They were reportedly arrested over some of the posts they shared online.
The organization’s Executive Director, YZ Ya’u, made the statement on Friday, stressing that the arrests and ongoing detention are deeply worrying.
According to CITAD, the influencers were taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force and are being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Gombe State Police Command.
He alleged that they have reportedly spent several days in detention without formal charges being disclosed.
“This situation is extremely concerning and goes against the constitutional protections for freedom of expression and due process in Nigeria,” the statement said.
“Using law enforcement to target people for peacefully expressing their views online undermines democratic principles and shrinks civic space.”
CITAD also pointed to reports suggesting that the arrests may have been driven by powerful individuals.
“Police officers should never be used to settle personal disputes or silence dissent in a democracy,” the statement added.
CITAD demand the immediate and unconditional release of Abu Ayrin, Musa Khale, and Alhaji Audu Atampa Bajoga, unless they are formally charged in a competent court.
It requested a full disclosure from the Nigeria Police Force about the legal reasons for the arrests and continued detention.
It called for respect for citizens’ constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and protection from arbitrary arrest.
The organization called on the new Inspector-General of Police to issue clear directives to officers nationwide, ensuring that police powers are not abused to intimidate or silence lawful expression online.
“The Nigeria Police Force must maintain professionalism, political neutrality, and full compliance with the rule of law,” CITAD said.
The group concluded by emphasizing that the health of Nigeria’s democracy depends on safeguarding citizens who exercise their rights.
“We will continue to follow this case and work with relevant stakeholders to ensure accountability and uphold democratic principles,” the statement said.
