Lagos Govt announces traffic plan for Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway reconstruction

The Lagos State Government has unveiled a traffic management strategy to facilitate the reconstruction of the main carriageway between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop (Inbound Lagos) along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The exercise, coordinated with the Federal Ministry of Works, is scheduled to run from Saturday, 7th March, 2026, to Saturday, 30th May, 2026, spanning 12 weeks.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and signed by Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, the affected section of the expressway will be completely closed to inbound Lagos traffic throughout the reconstruction period.

To ease vehicular movement along the corridor, the government has outlined alternative routes for motorists:

Lagos-bound traffic options:

Option 1: Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate heading to Lagos/Oshodi can divert to the BRT Corridor at Super Bus-Stop and exit at Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) to continue their journeys.

Option 2: Motorists may also travel via Ekoro Road, continue through Old Otta Road and Alira Street, linking Abeokuta Street to Pleasure Bus-Stop.

Option 3: An alternative route is via Abule Egba Underbridge to Agege, enabling drivers to reach their intended destinations.

The carriageway heading Abeokuta-bound will remain open to through traffic during the construction period.

To ensure efficient breakdown management, emergency tow vehicles will be stationed along the BRT corridor to provide rapid recovery support for stranded vehicles.

The Ministry of Transportation urged motorists to exercise patience, adhere to traffic signage, and cooperate with traffic officials deployed along the corridor to guarantee the safe and effective completion of the reconstruction works, which aim to enhance the overall motoring experience along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
