Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen has stated why he refused the club’s captain armband from teammate İlkay Gundogan during their Turkish Super Lig 3-1 win against Alanyaspor on Saturday.
Osimhen scored and provided an assist during the encounter against Alanyaspor as Galatasaray extended its lead at the top of the Turkish Super Lig to five points.
However, midfielder Lucas Torreira led Galatasaray onto the pitch wearing the team’s captain armband.
Torreira gave the armband to Gundogan after he was substituted in the second half, but the former Manchester City midfielder gave it to Osimhen.
Osimhen, however, rejected the captain’s armband from Gundogan as he told the 35-year-old German to wear it.
Speaking at his post-match interview after the game, Osimhen was asked why he gave the captain’s armband back to Gundogan.
The Nigerian international said: “Ilkay is someone I respect very much, someone very valuable to me. He is an incredible person. He’s both calm and motivating. Hebis visionary,” Osimhen said.
“It felt strange when he brought me the captain’s armband. I gave it back to him so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He’s someone who deserves love.”
