Edo: Two children drown in floodwatersite

Two children have lost their lives after drowning in a floodwater collection site on Erediauwa Street, off Sapele Road, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday.

According to eyewitness account, four children had been playing near the designated floodwater channel when they accidentally slipped into the muddy pool.

While two of the children were retrieved without signs of life, the remaining two were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where they were successfully revived.

According to the witness, the area was constructed to collect excess floodwater and was not considered a safe place for children to play due to its muddy and slippery condition.

“No one expected children to be around that spot. It is meant for flood control, and the mud made it very dangerous,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, said emergency responders were immediately deployed after the report was received.

She explained that two of the children had already died before rescue teams arrived, while the other two were pulled out alive and rushed to a medical facility for treatment.
