Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured that the state has no outstanding pension arrears, emphasising his administration’s dedication to ensuring the welfare and dignity of retirees.
The assurance was conveyed in a statement on Monday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, following a courtesy visit by the senior management team of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, PTAD.
The delegation, led by Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya, met with the governor at Lagos House, Marina.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the high regard in which pensioners are held, stating that his administration continues to prioritise fairness, equity, and respect for those who have served the government.
“We in Lagos State recognise and value the contributions of our pensioners.
“They have devoted significant parts of their lives to public service, and we remain committed to treating them with the dignity they deserve,” he said.
On the state’s pension reforms under the contributory pension scheme, the governor affirmed that Lagos has cleared all pension liabilities.
“Currently, Lagos State is the only state without any pension arrears. Over the past three years, we have settled all outstanding obligations. No pensioner can claim that we owe them years of unpaid benefits,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also explained that retirees with complete documentation now receive their pensions within two to three months after leaving service.
“For those who have dedicated their lives to public service, the least we can do is to provide a responsive system that assures them of our appreciation in their later years,” he stated.
The governor pledged ongoing collaboration with PTAD to further improve the welfare of pensioners living in Lagos State.
Speaking during the visit, PTAD Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya noted that nearly 200,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme nationwide reside in Lagos and called for continued cooperation with the state government.
She also highlighted reforms approved in August 2025 by President Bola Tinubu under the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, aimed at strengthening social protection and promoting dignity for senior citizens.
