Russia, Iran discuss US-Israel strikes amid Middle East tensions

Russia and Iran had an exchange on Tuesday as tensions remain high in the Middle East over the warfare launched by the United States and Israel.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the current situation following the “unprovoked” military aggression.”

The senior officials agreed that the actions undermine the fundamental norms of international law and carry grave consequences for the entire region.

Lavrov said Russia’s opposition to the attack on Iran was reiterated by its representative at the United Nations Security Council meeting, and urged parties to ensure the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The diplomat, however, reaffirmed Moscow’s “support of de-escalation, rejection of force, and a transition to a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict,” indicating its readiness to participate in such efforts.

Russia is mediating between Iran and the Arab States following President Vladimir Putin’s call with regional leaders on Monday. Iran’s missile and drone attacks have affected multiple Gulf States.

On Tuesday, an Iranian drone hit the U.S. Consulate in Dubai. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it struck a parking lot adjacent to the building, adding that “all personnel are accounted for.”

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was also rocked by two drones. Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the attack resulted in limited fire ‌and some material damage, citing an initial assessment.

Israel, meanwhile, is targeting more Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. On Tuesday, the Defense Forces published a new evacuation order for more than a dozen places where strikes are imminent.

The list named 16 places mostly in southern Lebanon, and advised residents to stay at least 1,000 meters away. “Evacuate immediately and do not return to the villages and towns at this stage,” the IDF warned.
