The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has called on state governments to strengthen their response as cases of Lassa fever continue to increase across the country.
In a recent update, the agency said āthe rise in infections is being recorded in several statesā, raising concerns about the spread of the disease, especially during the dry season when outbreaks are more common.
The agency urged states to improve surveillance, ensure early detection, and provide proper treatment for infected persons. It also stressed the need for better public awareness to help people understand how the disease spreads and how to prevent it.
Lassa fever is mainly transmitted through contact with food or household items contaminated by rats.
Health officials are advising Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene, store food safely, and keep their environments clean to reduce exposure.
The NCDC also encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, headache, or bleeding to seek medical attention immediately, as early treatment increases chances of survival.
The agency assured the general public of its commitment to supporting states with resources and technical assistance but emphasized that stronger action at the state level is key to controlling the outbreak.
