Gunmen strike again in Ondo, abduct woman, shoot husband

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Wednesday night struck in the Pelebe axis of Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State, during which a woman was abducted and her husband shot.

With the attack carried out in the Ogunti Camp area of the community, residents have been thrown into a state of panic.

The state had in the past weeks been faced with incessant security challenges, with kidnappings and killings by armed men occuring on a daily basis.

The development had also led to series of protests in communities with residents and youths berating government for shirking in its responsibility to protect lives and property.

According to sources, the gunmen, who were fully armed, stormed the community and shot sporadically into the air, which made the residents scamper for safety.

One of the sources revealed that the couple were outside their residence when the gunmen arrived, adding that the husband, Daniel Adesida, who is a tomato farmer, was shot by the armed men when he attempted to stop them from abducting his wife.

After the shooting, the farmer was left in the pool of his own blood while his wife was whisked away by the gunmen.

While confirming the incident, the police public relations officer, Jimoh Abayomi, disclosed that Adesida was rescued and taken to the police clinic for medical attention, adding that the area had been secured.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed intensified patrols, bush-combing operations, and intelligence gathering within the affected area and adjoining communities with a view to apprehending the fleeing suspects.

“The command assures residents that no effort will be spared in tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice. Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or individuals to the nearest police station.”
