Cambridge dominates in rain-affected match

NIGEL – Cambridge FC delivered a dominant first-half performance against Germiston Ashfire FC in their Hollywood Bets League clash at MacKenzieville Stadium on March 1.

Heavy rain, however, forced an early halt to the match, leaving their impressive 2-0 lead unresolved. Cambridge came out on fire at the start of the match and attacked from all four corners. They dominated possession and created various scoring opportunities from the onset.

Germiston had to defend for long periods of the first half. Cambridge was able to strike in the 35th minute when Njabulo Ntsjebe Mahlangu scored.

Thereafter the team from Nigel dominated proceedings and Oupa Junior Mbokazi scored Cambridge’s second goal. The rain started falling heavily with the first half coming to an end.

As the second half was about to start the match officials and the two captains inspected the playing area and it was decided that the field is unsafe and the match was abandoned.

The match will have to be replayed at a later date at the same venue.

“This was an exceptional performance by the boys. When plans come together on the field is a big positive for me and once we gel as one we will continue to produce good performances” said head coach John Mourinho Mosia.

“I am happy with the first half performance by the boys. We could’ve scored more but lack composure in front of goals was our downfall. It’s unfortunate that Mother Nature came to disrupt play.

“The stoppage was for the safety of players. We will prepare for our next match in Benoni and big thanks to the supporters for being here for us” said Ignatius Maphike, club chairperson.

The Cambridge reserve team lost their first match in the MacKenzieville Alra Park Football League with 3-2 score against Playaz FC.
