​Transitional justice: an urgent need for Senegal 

  Transitional justice is a crucial process for Senegal, particularly after the political violence that marked the country between 2021 and 2024. This is why it is considered as an emergency. Between 2021 and 2024, Senegal experienced a series of violent demonstrations, triggered in particular by the arrest of Ousmane Sonko, president of the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, the leader of the opposition, and by the attempts of President Macky Sall to briguer a troisième mandate. These demonstrations were marked by excessive use of force by the security forces, resulting in the death of at least 65 people and injuries for more than 1 000 others. In March 2024, President Macky Sall promulgated a law of amnesty for acts related to political demonstrations between February 2021 and February 2024. This law has been criticized for its unique and potential opposition to granting impunity to the authors of serious crimes, including homicides. Despite its pacification objective, it has been criticised by victims and civil society organisations.
