Diego Maradona’s ex-wife, Claudia Villafañe, has spoken up in support of Lionel Messi after the football legend is being criticized over his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.
She thinks the Argentine is in a situation where he has to act without worrying about what other people might think.
Speaking to Cholila Online, Villafañe remembered when Maradona met with Hugo Chavez, a former leader of Venezuela, and noted that it felt similar to watching Messi interact with Trump.
She said that players did not really pay much attention to the anger and said, “I saw the picture of Messi with Trump.
“I also saw Diego’s with Chávez. People are like that: some will like it and others won’t. I think he’s in a position where he can make a decision without worrying about what the other person will say next.
“It was always like this. He never considered what the other person wanted to say or if they wanted it or not.”
Talking about Messi, Villafañe added that the Inter Miami captain was kind to everyone around him and said, “I think he acts on instinct.
“We would all have to move like this, without thinking about it. We visited the rally with some friends. He was really kind to us, and he showed them the players. It was really amazing.
Lionel Messi and the other Inter Miami players went to the White House this week. They were invited by Donald Trump because they won the MLS Cup last season.
