Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Monday signed the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 into law, a move designed to align the state’s electricity framework with the Electricity Act 2023 and provisions of the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Following the signing ceremony, the governor also inaugurated the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, LASERC, at Lagos House in Ikeja.
The commission is tasked with regulating and supervising the electricity market within the state, with the aim of ensuring a dependable, cost-effective, and efficient power supply for residents and businesses.
The newly constituted board of the commission comprises Temitope George as Chief Executive Officer, Akinwunmi Ogunbiyi as Chairman, Bello Wasiu Oladimeji as Non-Executive Member, Adekunle Olapade as Executive Member in charge of Engineering and Standards, and Kunle Falola as Executive Member responsible for Licensing and Compliance.
According to the state government, LASERC will perform several key responsibilities, including the regulation and licensing of electricity service providers operating within Lagos.
The commission will also ensure compliance with industry standards and oversee the quality of services delivered to consumers.
The regulatory body will also be responsible for developing fair electricity tariffs that balance affordability for consumers with sustainability for operators. It will also handle consumer complaints and work to prevent unfair or exploitative practices within the electricity market.
The commission is further expected to promote the growth and modernization of the power sector in Lagos by encouraging competition, supporting renewable energy initiatives, and advancing energy efficiency and grid development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the establishment of LASERC marks a significant step toward improving electricity supply in the state.
He said the commission would help strengthen service delivery, encourage innovation in the power sector, and safeguard the interests of electricity consumers across Lagos.
