Tinubu mourns late Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde 

President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the death of former Super Eagles head coach, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde.

Onigbinde passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President sympathised with the family, associates and the entire Nigerian football community over the loss of the respected football administrator.

Tinubu also extended his condolences to the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission, as well as professional colleagues and football fans across the country.

The President described the late Onigbinde as a trailblazer who made significant contributions to the growth of football in Nigeria.

He noted that the former coach distinguished himself as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles in 1982, adding that his leadership and commitment helped shape the development of the sport in the country.

“Chief Onigbinde distinguished himself as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles in 1982,” the statement read.

Tinubu also highlighted the late coach’s role in guiding Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations 1984, describing it as a historic achievement in the nation’s football history.

“President Tinubu commends the contributions of the Modakeke high chief to the development of grassroots football and the strengthening of football administration in Nigeria,” the statement added.

The President further stated that the accomplished football manager would be remembered for his values and dedication to the game.

“He will be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight and passion for the round-leather game.”

The President prayed for the repose of the late football icon and asked God to grant comfort to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
