Fulani group accuses military personnel of killing nine cows in Plateau community

The Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, GAFDAN, has accused military personnel of shooting and killing nine cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen in an unprovoked attack in Tangoron community of Bassa Local Government Area Plateau State.

A statement posted on the Facebook page of GAFDAN said the alleged shooting occurred on March 2, 2026, when the herdsmen were grazing their cattle only to be attacked by the soldiers resulting in the shooting that led to the killing of the cows.

The statement with the headline, ‘Unprovoked attack on grazing herders and their livestock by military officers’, read: “On the evening of 2nd March 2026, military personnel allegedly shot nine grazing cattle in Tangoron, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State. The soldiers reportedly moved from Maiyanga before the incident.

“According to community sources, there was no provocation, farm damage, or prior confrontation whatsoever. Two cattle died instantly, two were later slaughtered due to injuries, and five remain severely wounded.

“We call for an immediate and transparent investigation, accountability where necessary, and compensation for affected livestock owners.

“There is no life, without livelihood and for centuries, livestock keeping had been our major source of livelihood.”

However, spokesman for the Operation Enduring Peace, OPEP, Captain Chinonso Oteh, who spoke to DAILY POST on telephone on Tuesday, denied knowledge of such incident.

“I can categorically say that such an incident never took place as there have not been any confrontations with Fulani herders in any Plateau community in recent times.

“In fact as we speak, we are just coming from Barkin Ladi and I can confirm that such an incident did not happen. However, we will still carry out an investigation into the matter but I can assure you that nothing like that happened,” Oteh said.
