
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has discussed US President Donald Trump’s position regarding Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
These developments arise amidst the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has resulted in global geopolitical tensions.
The United States is scheduled to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in collaboration with Canada and Mexico. As the tournament approaches this June, concerns have been raised regarding the geopolitical strains between the US and Iran.
Despite having qualified, Iran’s participation remains uncertain due to the ongoing conflict with the US. In response to these circumstances, FIFA president Gianni Infantino held a meeting with President Trump to address these issues.
In a statement released by FIFA Media, Gianni Infantino provided insights into Trump’s position on Iran’s involvement in the 2026 World Cup. He stated:
“This evening, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, to discuss the preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the increasing anticipation as we are set to commence in just 93 days. We also addressed the current situation in Iran, noting that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
“During our discussions, President Trump emphasized that the Iranian team is certainly welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States. We all require an event like this to unite people now more than ever, and I genuinely appreciate the President of the United States for his support, as it once again demonstrates that football brings the world together.”
Iran secured its place in the esteemed tournament through the Asian Football Confederation’s qualifying process. However, it remains uncertain what their position will be regarding this issue, considering their relationship with the US.
