The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mao Ohuabunwa, has expressed optimism that the party’s forthcoming state congresses will strengthen its structures nationwide.

Ohuabunwa, who is a loyalist to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, said the congresses scheduled for the weekend are expected to deepen internal democracy and consolidate ongoing efforts to reposition the party.

ā€œWe are optimistic that the state congresses scheduled to take place this weekend will further consolidate this process and strengthen our party structures across the federation,ā€ he said.

According to him, the exercises go beyond routine administrative procedures and are central to rebuilding the party’s legitimacy and inclusiveness.

The BoT chairman also disclosed that preparations were in progress for the party’s National Convention slated for March 29 and 30, which he said would further reposition the party and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and national service.

ā€œIn the same spirit, preparations are well underway for our National Convention scheduled for the 29th and 30th of March, which will provide an opportunity for the party to further reposition itself and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles, unity, and national service,ā€ he said.

Ohuabunwa also acknowledged recent judgments of the Court of Appeal affirming the legality of the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

ā€œIt is also important to acknowledge the recent judgments of the Court of Appeal, which have affirmed the legality and authority of the National Caretaker Committee led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed,ā€ he stated.

He said the court rulings had provided clarity and stability within the party, noting that the PDP would continue to respect the rule of law.

ā€œThese judicial pronouncements have provided much-needed clarity and stability within the party. As a law-abiding political organization, we respect the decisions of the courts and will continue to conduct our affairs in accordance with the rule of law and the provisions of our party constitution,ā€ he added.

The BoT also stressed the need to strengthen the party’s membership base through its ongoing electronic registration initiative.

According to Ohuabunwa, the exercise will help modernise the party’s membership system, improve transparency and create a reliable database of members nationwide.

ā€œThe Board therefore urges all State Chairmen and Zonal Chairmen, working in collaboration with other party leaders at all levels, to intensify efforts in mobilizing and encouraging members across the federation to participate actively in the e-registration exercise,ā€ he said.

He emphasised that a well-documented membership structure is vital for building a more organised and effective party ahead of future political engagements.

ā€œA strong and properly documented membership is fundamental to building a more organized, responsive, and formidable party as we continue to reposition the PDP for greater national service,ā€ he added.

Ohuabunwa further called on party leaders and members to approach internal deliberations with maturity and unity, noting that the PDP has historically overcome challenges.

ā€œOur party has faced challenges before, yet history has repeatedly shown that the PDP possesses the resilience, depth, and national spread required to overcome difficulties and emerge stronger,ā€ he said.

He added that party elders must continue to promote unity and protect the long-term interests of the party and Nigerians.

ā€œAs elders of this great party, our responsibility is to provide guidance, promote unity, and ensure that our decisions always protect the long-term interests of the PDP and the Nigerian people who look to us for credible leadership,ā€ he said.

Ohuabunwa urged members to embrace reconciliation and work collectively toward strengthening the party.

ā€œLet us therefore approach our deliberations today with open minds, a spirit of reconciliation, and a firm commitment to strengthening the unity and stability of our party,ā€ he added.
