2027: Zamfara PDP chairman dumps party, defects to APC

Zamfara State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jamil Jibo Magayaki, has announced his resignation from the party and his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Magayaki disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, explaining that his decision was influenced by recent political developments in Zamfara State.

His exit from the PDP follows the earlier defection of the state Governor, Dauda Lawal, who on Monday left the opposition party to join the APC after what he described as extensive consultations with political stakeholders, party leaders, elders and supporters across the state.

In his statement, Magayaki stated:

“I, Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the Zamfara State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, hereby announce my formal defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress.”

He explained that the move was driven by the current political realities in the state and the need to align with a platform he believes is better positioned to address issues affecting residents.

“My decision to join the APC is based on the prevailing political situation in Zamfara State, which requires aligning with a party capable of tackling the challenges of security, development, and effective governance for the benefit of our people,” he said.

Magayaki’s defection is the latest in a series of political shifts in the state as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.

Governor Lawal, while announcing his own defection earlier in March, cited internal disagreements within the PDP and the need for stronger political collaboration to confront security and developmental challenges in the state.

In recent months, the PDP in Zamfara has witnessed several defections, including members of the State House of Assembly and numerous party supporters who have moved to the APC.
