The Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. John Gabaya, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gabaya announced the move in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ernest Agada.
He said the decision was taken to strengthen development in the council through closer collaboration with the Federal Government, as well as to reposition politically ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the decision followed “fervent prayers and wide consultations” with stakeholders and was carried out in line with the constitutional provisions of both parties.
“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity and development in Bwari Area Council, Abuja,” Gabaya said.
He explained that the defection would enable better partnership with the Federal Government to ensure sustainable development in the council.
Gabaya, who was elected chairman on the platform of the PDP in 2019, is currently serving his second term and is expected to complete his tenure in June.
The council chairman is also seeking election to the House of Representatives to represent the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
While appreciating those who supported his emergence as chairman under the PDP, Gabaya commended their resilience, commitment and sacrifice.
He also expressed respect for his former political associates in the PDP, stressing that his defection should not be seen as an act of hostility but rather a step taken in the broader interest of the council’s development.
Gabaya further prayed for peaceful and credible elections in 2027 and expressed confidence that Bwari Area Council would deliver overwhelming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
