Republicans desert Trump as approval drops over Iran war

A national survey by Fox News shows declining approval for US President Donald Trump amid growing opposition to the country’s military action in Iran.

According to the poll, 42 percent of voters support the current US military action against Iran, while 58 percent oppose it, including nearly four in ten who are strongly opposed.

Support for the military effort varies widely across political lines.

Among Republicans, 77 percent back the action, compared to 12 percent of Democrats and 28 percent of independents.

Gender differences are narrower, with 45 percent of men supporting the action compared to 38 percent of women.

Despite some support, many voters expressed concern about the long-term impact of the conflict.

More respondents believe the military action will make the United States less safe than safer, while about a quarter said it would make little difference.

The survey also shows rising disapproval of Trump’s handling of Iran. Some 64 percent of voters disapprove, up from 57 percent in January. Disapproval of his overall foreign policy stands at 62 percent, compared to 60 percent last month.

Trump’s overall job approval rating is now 41 percent, with 59 percent disapproving — the highest disapproval recorded across both of his terms. Nearly half of respondents (47 percent) said they strongly disapprove.
