Broadcasters critical, serve as bridge between electorate, INEC — Agboke

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, has stated that broadcasters play a critical role in democratic systems, serving as a bridge between the electorate and the electoral body through the dissemination of information.

This is as Dr. Agboke outlined key expectations for broadcasters ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Agboke made this known during a one-day workshop organised by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Monday in Osogbo.

The workshop, themed “Upholding Principles of Fairness, Accuracy and Impartiality in Election Coverage: INEC’s Expectations from Broadcasters Before, During and After Elections,” brought together media professionals and electoral stakeholders to deliberate on responsible election reporting.

Speaking as a guest speaker, Dr. Agboke described the workshop as timely and strategic, commending the organisers for creating a platform to strengthen media roles in the electoral process.

According to him, “the media remain central to informing, educating and influencing citizens, particularly during election periods when public interest is at its peak.”

The Commissioner reiterated that the “Independent National Electoral Commission considers the media a strategic partner in delivering credible elections.”

He added that “both institutions share a common objective of ensuring elections that are transparent, inclusive and reflective of the will of the people.”

Before elections, he urged media organisations to “provide accurate and timely information regarding electoral guidelines, processes and timelines issued by the commission.”

He also emphasised the importance of public education on voter registration, collection of Permanent Voter Cards, and participation procedures.

He called for equitable access to media platforms for all political parties and candidates, stressing that fairness must be maintained at all times.

The Commissioner warned against the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and unverified content, noting that such practices could mislead the public and incite tension during the electoral process.
