The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned the recent killings of residents in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attack which occurred on Palm Sunday as disturbing and unacceptable.
The statement was shared on the official page of the Nigerian Bar Association, following reports that gunmen attacked communities, leaving several persons dead and others injured.
The NBA said the incident, which happened on a day set aside for worship and reflection by Christians, has further highlighted the growing insecurity faced by citizens across the country.
āThis tragedy, which occurred on Palm Sunday, a sacred day for Christians, is deeply heartbreaking. A day meant for prayer and hope was turned into one of fear and mourning,ā the statement read.
The association warned that the repeated nature of such attacks raises serious concerns, especially as perpetrators often escape justice.
āWhen perpetrators of violence continue to evade justice, it sends a dangerous message that human life is expendable and weakens public confidence in the system,ā it added.
The NBA called on security agencies to urgently identify and arrest those responsible, urging both the Federal and Plateau State Governments to strengthen security in affected communities and other vulnerable areas.
It stressed that beyond condemnation, victims and their families deserve justice and support.
āWe call on security agencies to swiftly identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible. The victims deserve justice, and affected families must not be left without support,ā the statement said.
The association also extended condolences to the families of victims and the people of Plateau State, expressing solidarity with those affected by the attack.
It further noted that the continued killings raise constitutional concerns, particularly regarding the protection of the right to life, warning that failure to safeguard citizens could weaken trust in governance and the rule of law.
