Twenty-four corps members serving in Sokoto State have been sanctioned by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for offences ranging from absenteeism to outright abscondment.
Usman Yakubu Yaro, the Sokoto Coordinator, disclosed at the passing-out ceremony of the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members in Sokoto.
He explained that eight corps members would repeat their service year, while 16 others had their service extended due to various infractions committed during the exercise.
According to Yaro, “The scheme’s firm stance on discipline as acts of truancy will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
He lauded the contributions of the majority of corps members, saying that two outstanding individuals were honoured with the Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for their impactful community development efforts. The award is named after the Sultan of Sokoto.
The coordinator noted that securing white-collar jobs is increasingly challenging, calling on the outgoing corps members to remain good ambassadors of the scheme and to make productive use of the skills acquired during their service year.
Yaro hailed the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his sustained support for the scheme, particularly in the payment of state allowances, as well as the Sultan of Sokoto for his continued backing of youth-focused initiatives.
He stated that the deployment of corps members to rural communities saw many, especially medical personnel, helping to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery, while others contributed to teaching in schools.
The ceremony marked the successful completion of the service year, with a call on corps members to uphold the ideals of discipline, patriotism, and national service.
