Patriotic Alliance Rejects Calls To Impeach President Ramaphosa

Johannesburg The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has firmly dismissed mounting calls for the impeachment of President Cyril Ramaphosa, warning against what it described as “manufactured outrage and political theatre.”

Several opposition parties have intensified calls for the impeachment of President Ramaphosa following the declassification and release of a damning IPID report about the 2020 Phala Phala farm robbery.

In a statement issued on Monday, 13 April 2026, the PA said it would not support any parliamentary motion to remove the President, stressing that impeachment is “the most serious constitutional step available to Parliament” and should not be used as a political weapon.

The PA is part of the Government of National Unity.

The party criticised opponents for misinterpreting the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) report, insisting that it does not implicate President Ramaphosa.

“It would be helpful if those calling for impeachment did the same – and understood it,” the statement read.

PA leader Gayton McKenzie, who is also the sport, arts and culture minister, underscored his party’s position, declaring: “Cyril Ramaphosa is going nowhere”.

McKenzie added: “We are not going to remove a sitting President based on noise and political games. South Africa needs stability.”

He argued that the country’s focus should remain on pressing issues such as job creation, service delivery, and public safety, rather than what it described as attempts by “the politically desperate” to trigger a constitutional crisis.

The statement concluded with a pledge to act “in the best interests of the country, grounded in fact, guided by principle and focused on stability.”

However, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has announced that it has formally written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, demanding the immediate initiation of impeachment proceedings against President Ramaphosa under Section 89 of the Constitution.

ATM argues the report reveals a “coordinated abuse of state power,” a cover-up of the theft of about US$580 000 and misuse of police resources by the Presidential Protection Unit to investigate the incident privately rather than report it officially.

They describe Ramaphosa as “irreparably compromised” and have called for a full parliamentary inquiry, intelligence committee intervention, and criminal prosecutions.

The Economic Freedom Fighters have similarly accused Ramaphosa of orchestrating state power abuse and joined demands for Section 89 proceedings.

ActionSA has pushed for a parliamentary inquiry, highlighting the concealment of the crime by senior protection officers, including recommendations for disciplinary action against Presidential Protection Unit head Major-General Wally Rhoode.

The parties maintain that the IPID findings expose serious violations of police procedures and constitutional obligations, warranting accountability at the highest level.

President Ramaphosa has denied personal involvement in any cover-up.
