Tanker Fire Extinguished: N12 Reopened, Declared Safe For Public UseĀ

Johannesburg – The N12 Freeway in Bassonia has been reopened to traffic in both directions a day after the fatal collision and subsequent gas tanker fire.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) announced today, Monday, 20 April 2026, that the ā€œroadway has been declared safe for public use, and all previously active diversions at the R59 Reading Interchange and Comaro Road have been liftedā€.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said: ā€œEmergency teams have successfully completed the high-risk decanting process and the necessary mop-up operations.

ā€œThe roadway has been declared safe for public use.ā€

Superintendent Fihla added, ā€œWe would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated teams who worked tirelessly under hazardous conditions to secure the scene.

ā€œWe also thank the public and the residents of the Southern Suburbs for their extreme patience and cooperation while these essential operations were carried out.ā€ā€™
