
A tragic electrocution incident along the Kupafu–Essa village axis of the Katcha highway, in Niger State, has resulted in the death of five persons, leaving three others seriously injured.
The incident occurred on 20th April, 2026, at about 9:00am along the highway.
The incident happened when a trailer conveying cartons of milk and passengers from Lagos to Kano encountered a traffic obstruction along the highway.
It was gathered in an attempt to bypass the hold-up, the driver diverted the vehicle into a nearby bush path.
During the diversion, the passengers and the loaded trailer reportedly came into contact with high-voltage power cables, resulting in the electrocution of five persons on the spot, while three others sustained varying degrees of serious injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said the three injured victims were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, for medical attention.
He disclosed that the remains of the five deceased were evacuated to the General Hospital, Badeggi, Katcha.
The Command added that the driver of the trailer is currently at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him for investigation.
