NPFL sanctions Kano Pillars over alleged security breaches, fan misconduct

Kano Pillars have been sanctioned by the Nigeria Professional Football League for multiple violations of league rules during their home fixture against Rivers United on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

The league body found the club guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security at the match venue, a lapse that allowed unauthorized individuals access to restricted areas. The incident was further compounded by a pitch invasion involving supporters, which jeopardised the safety of players and match officials.

According to the NPFL, Kano Pillars also breached league regulations due to the conduct of their fans, whose actions were deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute. Supporters were reported to have intimidated and harassed match officials, with instances of gross misconduct that undermined the integrity of the league.

As a result, the club has been handed a series of fines totalling N15 million. This includes N4 million for repeated failure to provide adequate security and N3 million for acts of unsporting behaviour. An additional N3 million fine was imposed for failing to control supporters whose actions led to the harassment and intimidation of officials.

The club was also fined N3 million for repeated gross misconduct towards match officials, while a further N2 million penalty was issued for disruption and delay of the match, including the harassment of the centre referee that led to a stoppage in play.

In addition to the financial penalties, Kano Pillars will play their next three home matches behind closed doors. The sanction covers their only remaining home game this season, as well as their first two home fixtures of the next campaign.

The NPFL stated that the disciplinary measures are part of efforts to uphold professionalism, safety, and fair play across the league.

Kano Pillars have been given 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
