The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has declared that it has no other option than to adopt direct primaries ahead of the forthcoming general elections in the state.
The APC Chairman, Chief Moses Adeyemo, made this declaration on Monday.
Adeyemo spoke while receiving the screening and appeal committee members deployed to the state from the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, in Ibadan.
The screening committee consists of a former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Taofiq AbdusSalam, Kamal Sanusi, Smart Oluwole, Tunde Kolade, and Olabamiji Agunloye.
The screening appeal committee includes Jibola Oduwole (Chairman), Abimbola Jack, and Jelil Jimoh.
The former deputy governor, while addressing the gathering, noted that the party had set machineries in motion to achieve consensus across the board.
He, however, regretted that available reports indicated that the party would have to adopt the second option, which is direct primaries for the governorship election.
Adeyemo further maintained that nothing would stand in the way of the party conducting free, fair, and credible direct primaries for its candidates.
“We set machineries in motion for us to achieve the aim of consensus across the board, but reports available to me indicate that we would have to go by the second option, which is direct primary, in certain cases, including the governorship ticket.
“To this end, we shall work towards organising a free, fair, and credible exercise in all the affected areas, even as we cannot rule out the possibility of some aspirants having a rethink and supporting the consensus arrangement as necessary.”
