Second Slain KZN Crime Intelligence Officer Sergeant Khuzwayo Laid To Rest

KwaMashu – A sombre mood filled Section D of KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, as members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) gave a final salute to their fallen colleague, Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo.

The 39-year-old officer, attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit, was laid to rest on Saturday, 30 May 2026, after succumbing to gunshot wounds sustained during an attack last month.

Sergeant Khuzwayo and Captain Nel, who was a former member of the Special Task Force, were ambushed and shot at Mount Edgecombe outside Durban on 30 April 2026.

The 52-year-old captain died on the scene after being struck by a hail of bullets, just weeks after receiving a promotion.

Khuzwayo had been hospitalised following the attack but succumbed to his wounds earlier this week.

During the funeral service, KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence head Major General Nosipho Madondo urged South African Police Service members not to be discouraged by such attacks.

“We have a mandate to fight organised crime, and we needed Sergeant Khuzwayo to carry out that mandate with us,” Major General Madondo said.

“It is a concern that he died at the hands of the organised crime he was fighting against.

“Investigations are at an advanced stage, and we shall know no rest before the killers are brought to justice.”
