Youth Day: Department Says No School On Monday And Tuesday, Extra Holiday Declared

Pretoria – The Department of Basic Education has announced that tomorrow, Monday, 15 June 2026, has been designated as a special school holiday.

In a terse statement made available to The Bulrushes, the department said it “wishes to remind parents, guardians, learners, educators, and all education stakeholders that Monday, 15 June 2026, has been designated as a special school holiday in terms of the approved 2026 school calendar”.

This year marks 50 years since the events of 16 June 1976, a significant moment in South Africa’s history that continues to be commemorated annually through Youth Day on 16 June.

“As Tuesday, 16 June 2026, is a nationally recognised public holiday, schools across the country will therefore be closed on both Monday, 15 June 2026, and Tuesday, 16 June 2026,” the statement said.

“Teaching and learning activities will therefore resume on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.”

The statement added: “As the country marks this important milestone in its history, learners, educators, and school communities are encouraged to commemorate the occasion safely and responsibly.  

“A successful return to school on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, will ensure that teaching and learning continue uninterrupted as the academic calendar for the term progresses towards the closure on 26 June 2026.”
