The Bauchi State Police Command has launched a statewide enforcement campaign against unregistered vehicles and the use of concealed or fake number plates, deploying mobile courts to ensure the swift prosecution of offenders.
The initiative, which commenced onĀ Wednesday, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is aimed at enhancing road safety and strengthening security across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, mobile courts have been stationed at the headquarters of the stateās five area commands, as well as at strategic locations within the Bauchi metropolis.
The operation targets vehicles operating without proper registration, those with covered or obscured number plates, and vehicles displaying unauthorised or fictitious registration numbers.
Speaking on the development, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said, āUnregistered and unidentifiable vehicles remain a major security risk. Such vehicles are often used to perpetrate violent crimes like kidnapping and armed robbery. This enforcement is not aimed at harassing motorists, but at protecting lives and property.ā
The police chief warned that vehicles found in violation of the law would be impounded, while offenders would face immediate prosecution before the mobile courts. Penalties, he noted, include fines and other sanctions as provided under Nigeriaās motor vehicle registration and licensing laws.
The command urged vehicle owners and drivers to regularise their registration documents, properly display their number plates, and refrain from covering or altering them.
Police authorities also called on members of the public to cooperate with officers carrying out the enforcement exercise, stressing that the operation would be sustained without compromise.
The command said the measure forms part of broader efforts to eliminate the use of untraceable vehicles by criminal elements and create a safer environment for residents across Bauchi State.
