Polokwane – An “orgy of violence” in which a police sergeant shot dead a 32-year-old male motorist and later raped a 14-year-old girl ended when he turned the gun on himself.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the sergeant fatally shot himself at his residence in Ga-Masha, Sekhukhune District, on Sunday, 27 September 2026.
Allegations are that the police sergeant stationed at Mecklenburg Police Station was driving along a narrow road when he had an altercation with another motorist.
“A dispute reportedly ensued between the two men before the police officer allegedly shot the victim with his service firearm and left the scene,” Colonel Ledwaba said.
The police were alerted to the shooting incident at Ga-Mashamothane at about 15:30.
“Members responded to the scene and found a 32-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds,” Colonel Ledwaba said.
“He was certified dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.”
“The suspect allegedly thereafter drove to his residence with a 14-year-old girl who had been accompanying him.
“According to preliminary information, the minor was allegedly raped at the residence.
“It is further alleged that shortly afterwards, the suspect took his service firearm and fatally shot himself.”
Colonel Ledwaba said said the police in Tubatse under Sekhukhune District have opened cases of murder and rape, as well as an inquest.
IPID has been notified and will handle further investigation.
Commenting on the tragic incidents, the South African Police Service Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, said: “ Police officers are entrusted with firearms and are expected to uphold and enforce the law.
“Where a member is alleged to have acted contrary to the law, the circumstances must be thoroughly investigated, and the appropriate processes must follow.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and assure the affected minor that she will receive the necessary support.”
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incidents are continuing.
