Thohoyandou – Three South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and two awaiting-trial prisoners were among the six people who died in the R524 (Levubu Road) collision.
The deadly collision, outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo, earlier today, Tuesday 6 October 2026, involved a police van and a bakkie.
Tragedy struck as the prisoners were being driven from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou.
“Two of the awaiting-trial prisoners died on the spot alongside two other police officers, including an occupant of the Mahindra bakkie belonging to a water supply company,” lamented police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.
Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and certified five people, including the Mahindra bakkie driver, dead on the scene.
The third police officer was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to injuries.
“The total number of fatalities is now six, comprising three SAPS members; one male and two females; two awaiting-trial prisoners, both males; and the driver of the civilian vehicle, a male,” said Brigadier Mashaba.
“The other awaiting-trial prisoner was seriously injured and taken to a medical facility, where he is under police guard.”
The identities of the deceased were being withheld until the next of kin have been informed of the tragedy.
Police are investigating a case of possible culpable homicide.
SAPS Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers has conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families.
“We extend our sincere condolences to all the bereaved families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident,” said Lieutenant General Scheepers.
“We also wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
