The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) can only draw in investors by ensuring transparency, credibility, and well-motivated referees who provide their best performance. Gbenga Elegbeleye, the chairman of the NPFL, shared this information during a discussion with NPFL reporters in Akure, the capital of the state. He emphasized that the league organizers will maintain high standards and strictly enforce the rules without bias. Elegbeleye also announced, “Starting next season, we will be increasing players’ salaries.” He stated that a principle of checks and balances is necessary for the league’s growth. The former Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) emphasized that the league management will maintain its strict stance against thuggery and any forms of violence at the matches. He suggested that the NPFL has begun by implementing communication devices, which he described as the initial step before introducing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). He also mentioned that efforts are being made to train young referees on how to operate VAR, emphasizing that all Nigerian referees are graduates from higher education institutions. He stated, “We have initiated a three-point deduction for any offending team and imposed financial penalties to ensure that visiting teams feel secure.” He noted that since the introduction of the three-point deduction, home teams have started to safeguard away teams. The tendency for the home team to win has significantly decreased; on the first match day of the current season, there were at least four victories for the away teams. “We need to adhere to the rule and maintain our standards to ensure we get it right.” Many investors are willing to collaborate with us to help the league grow.
