Teen rides 54km for a cleanerfuture and community pride

Brianna Mupaya, a local teen who authored the Brakpan Broom children’s book about Clean Brakpan, led a cycling event starting at the Brakpan Olympic Centre on Kitzinger Avenue on April 21. She cycled to the Alberton Engen Truck Stop and back again as part of her CyClean Brakpan awareness campaign – 54km.

“The event was a heartfelt call for environmental action and youth empowerment, uniting local leaders, businesses and residents behind a shared vision for a cleaner Brakpan,” said Brian Mupaya, Brianna’s father.

The campaign was made possible through support and collaboration. The Brakpan SAPS and CPF provided security, led by Sector 1 manager Constable Audrey Buthelezi. SAPS detective and athlete Sergeant Brian Mngadi accompanied Brianna on the trip.

Freedom Front Plus PR Clr Riaan van Zyl supported the event with logistics, and Elias Mosire from the Brakpan Fire Department trained and mentored Brianna through her preparation.

The Kwa-Thema Fire Station gave Brianna gym access for her physical training, and businesses such as Engen, Jansen’s Butchery, Strictly Smart Signs and others contributed refreshments, signage and supplies. The EMS Guardian Angels escorted the cyclists to provide emergency medical response if needed.

The focus was to generate support for refurbishing and protecting heritage sites like the old Brakpan Library. Clean Brakpan is partnering with Brianna to clean the library.

Before the ride, Brianna emphasised the importance of civic pride, youth involvement in community projects and environmental responsibility. She appealed to Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza to support such initiatives.

According to Brian, the mayor had responded and agreed to schedule a meeting regarding the old library. The movement has given rise to the CyClean Brakpan Cycling Club, which plans to host annual rides like this one for various community causes.
