At least seven individuals lost their lives and twenty more were injured due to bomb explosions in Fangak county, South Sudan. The blasts resulted in the destruction of a hospital and a pharmacy, as reported on Saturday by the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). They stated that a bomb was dropped on the pharmacy, causing it to burn completely and damaging the hospital located in Old Fangak, which is part of the Greater Upper Nile region. MSF emphasized that the Old Fangak Hospital is the sole medical facility in Fangak county, catering to over 110,000 residents who already had very limited access to healthcare. The specifics regarding who conducted the attack or the reasons behind it were not immediately known, and at the time of this report, neither the government nor the military had issued comments on the situation. According to the DAILY POST, South Sudan has been officially peaceful since a 2018 agreement ended a five-year civil war between supporters of President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar. However, Machar’s recent arrest in March for allegedly attempting to incite a rebellion has raised worries that tensions may rise again.
