Human rights advocate and attorney Femi Falana has called on the Federal Government to provide compensation to the families of those affected by recent stampedes across the country. He made this statement on Friday in Akure during an event organized by the Ondo State Government, known as the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, in memory of the late governor. Falana held the Nigeria Police responsible for the stampedes that occurred in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, which resulted in over 65 fatalities during the distribution of palliatives. He argued that the police did not adequately ensure the safety of attendees during these events, stating, “It was a failure of security; it’s not poverty that led to the loss of lives. If there is any event or gathering, the police should provide security.” Additionally, Falana noted that Ondo State has set an example for other states by maintaining peace through the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun, initiated by Akeredolu.
