Joseph Odok, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State, has asserted that the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians have worsened under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a statement made in Calabar, Odok stated, “It is evident that the current federal government’s policies have only intensified the economic hardships of Nigerians.” He emphasized that the policies and governance have not eased the suffering but rather increased it in the country. Odok urged Nigerians to focus on demanding greater accountability and effective solutions to their economic issues instead of celebrating these misdirected decisions. He further pointed out that the nation is struggling to survive, with widespread hunger and poverty. “Nevertheless, the present administration wants us to celebrate their actions as if they were accomplishments.” The analyst condemned the elimination of the fuel subsidy, which those in positions of authority now blame the former administration for. “Isn’t it surprising that after cutting the fuel subsidy, they are borrowing more than the last administration did?” “They previously claimed that cutting the fuel subsidy was essential to protect our unborn children. Now that they have eliminated the fuel subsidy, along with many other subsidies on dollars, electricity, and other areas, they have effectively allowed the government to borrow irresponsibly.” Odok argues that the current borrowing trend will result in a significant debt burden for future generations, exacerbating existing national issues. He lamented that the elimination of the fuel subsidy has led to severe repercussions, such as rising inflation, increased poverty, and higher unemployment rates. “The cost of living has soared, with the prices of essential goods and services increasing dramatically.” The government’s choice to eliminate subsidies has resulted in heightened fuel smuggling, crime, and unemployment in the informal sector. “It’s ironic that cutting fuel subsidies, intended to benefit our economy, has instead caused more difficulties and instability.”
