5.7 Million Students Have Benefited From Free SHS – Akufo-Addo 

The Free Senior High School ( Free SHS) program, which was introduced in 2017 to expand access to secondary education, is a proud accomplishment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The President emphasized the program’s transformative influence in his last State of the Nation address on January 3, 2024, saying,” We have transformed learning, and there can never be a inversion of the fact that some 5.7 million young people have gained access to extra knowledge who would not have otherwise had the chance but for Free SHS.”
Without the system, many of these students, according to Akufo-Addo, would not have been able to attend secondary school. Over 50 % of candidates in Ghana have consistently received A1 to C6 in all core subjects since the first cohort of Free SHS students took the West African Senior School Certificate Examination ( WASSCE ) in 2020. Notably, Mathematics pass rates have improved significantly, rising from 33.12 % in 2016 to 66.86 % in 2024.
Beyond academic accomplishments, the President praised efforts to improve Technical and Vocational Education and Training ( TVET ). His administration has established 34 fresh TVET facilities and upgraded 62 current ones to maintain students get 21st-century skills and enhance the appeal and affordability of professional education.
President Akufo-Addo remarked,” I’m glad that we were courageous enough to begin the Free SHS coverage at the beginning of my first name and resisted the need for a steady introduction.” He continued,” We’ve taken the misconception that secondary school education belongs to people from some communities and individuals out of the Ghanaian mindset.”
Akufo-Addo’s administration’s endowment of schooling has created a strong foundation for future generations to flourish in addition to expanding access to extra education. His government’s commitment to changing the way education is taught in Ghana is demonstrated by the Free SHS program.
