A 63-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting a young woman inside a tailor’s shop in east Calgary, according to authorities. Police alledge Zufan Seyoum Gelete was working at Absalat Tailor located at 3509 17 Ave. S. E., at the time of the reported assault. The woman and her mother encountered Gelete, a relative of the girl’s, while they were out shopping in the area at the time, according to prosecutors. The woman was greeted by the man as the pair exchanged a short conversation, and the guy invited the girl to rush with him while her mother rushed to a local business.

Authorities believe the man forced the woman to remain on his lap inside the store as he sexually assaulted her and touched her badly. Authorities say the woman left the tailor purchase, located her family, and told her about the event. The girl’s family later contacted authorities and the Child Abuse Unit launched an investigation. Elete was detained on Thursday, December 12, 2024, and is facing charges of physical abuse and interfering with a minor. He is scheduled to future appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.
